Royal Flusher's Daily Vegas Pic - Aug 28, 2017 - Las Vegas Club

Las Vegas Club Most Liberal 21 Blackjack

As the long history and slow decline of the Las Vegas Club comes to an end - literally, Derek Stevens is totally swinging the wrecking ball on it - we remember and wonder what happened.

I put it down to the crazy rules they had for blackjack - the most liberal "21" in the world.

The Las Vegas Club got caught in a spiral where the owners, who didn't have the wherewithal to figure out how to market the place back to success, couldn't wait out the slow resurgence of Downtown.

(Hey, it's Monday morning, might as well make this a 2-fer.)

By the time the Fremont Street Experience was packed with drunken gamblers seeking out liberal 21, it was too late.

If it wasn't liberal 21, it was the really odd baseball stadium metaphor, executed as a baffling facade.
The poor Las Vegas Club turned into a dump at the end, but it was still an important part of Vegas history, and for a long time, a living slice of Vintage Vegas.

There's not many of them left as the older places have been shuttered, or gutted of their charm, one by one.

Riviera, Stardust, Fitzgeralds, Golden Gate, Gold Spike, Western...

The El Cortez seems to have managed to bridge the gap between reminiscent rundown sleaziness and modern kitschy coolness with the great turnaround they've executed over the last 8-10 years.

And that's today's pic.

Pics. Of the day.

    1. Golden Gate? Surely you mean Gold Spike.

      1. I meant Golden Gate, but you're right - I added Gold Spike to the list. And don't call me Shirley. :) I suppose there are others downtown that are so long gone nobody remembers them.
