My Las Vegas Cottage

Friday October 23rd 2015 day 2

First full day in Vegas!

I slept better than I thought I would and maybe that's because I just won $2,000. Every now and again I would wake up and remember getting the Royal, smile an angelic smile, scratch myself, and drift off into a blissful sleep.

Eastern time got the better of me and I woke up around 5:30 in the morning. I laid there quietly but the Quad Queen was also awake and we got to that moment where you both sort of agree yeah we're up.

And so up we did got.

The days at the Cal are often like one another and that's one of the things that we cherish about this place. Like I've said, people often ask me why I go to Vegas so often. I tell them it's like people going to their cottage. No one questions that they go there 500 times a summer. Well Las Vegas is like my cottage. and if Las Vegas is a cottage than the Cal is the warm fireplace at the center of it. Without the roasted marshmallows.

It's comfortable here, it's predictable, and we see the same smiling faces each trip, so that makes it special. And once again, favorite server Judy was on hand to bring me my dirty sloppy dish-coffee, with a smile. Actually, today it wasn't too bad.

They've been working on the casino renovation here, and I have to say, it's looking pretty good. Things are quite a bit brighter, and with the old fake brickwork around the alcoves removed, you can see from one end of the place to the other. It's really opened it up.

We played some video poker before breakfast, enjoying the morning beverage ritual. For some people that includes Jameson's.

Notice the trend here? I'm still quadally challenged while you know who keeps hitting you know what.

We had asked our host to get us into the video poker tournament which was starting today. I had some paperwork waiting for me on it, but there was none for the Quad Queen. Not a problem.
After breakfast which consisted of a very nice Zippy's chili omelette for me with hash browns and All Star American cheese, and the QQ had steak and eggs.  Just a nice little cottage breakfast, right?

Anyway we headed to the tournament area and the staff was very happy to place the quad Queen into the competition. That was the good news. The bad news was that we both played very badly. Neither of us hit four of a kind. Our scores sucked. We'd have to hit a Royal or Aces kicker and a few other quads to have a chance of getting into the big money. Maybe Saturday's round will be better.

Back in the world of real video poker, the Quad Queen was again out-quading me bigtime. Be that as it may, neither of us was getting any richer.

I headed up to the room to do some blogging, and the QQ headed to Main Street to get some scratchcards.

While I did the typey typey, she dumped $400. Not great.

Time for some fresh air and walkabout to both the Downtown Grand and the El Cortez, where we had some important financial questions to be answered. Because savvy financial wizards.

More on that in the next post.

    1. I could've bought two cottages, if I bought a cottage, instead of going to Vegas. No regrets, well, that's a lie, a few, but mainly no regrets!
