Dogsitting Larry the Cockapoo

Greetings, fellow Savvies, it's time for an update from Flusherville, where I worked for many years for Royal Canadian Veeblefetzer on the size 7 grommet line.

Now I live alone, yell at kids to get off my strip of lawn, and spend my time trying to figure out how to steal cable TV so I can watch re-runs of Love Boat.

Perhaps the prudent thing is to just give some facts.

Fact. I missed the Quad Queen terribly since returning home, and still do. However, I sense that things are getting better as I work through stuff and plan for my future. Karen told me to 'Be happy' and I'm trying to do that.

Fact! During Karen's battle with ALS, my body took a beating and I became type 69 diabetic. I danced along for 15 years with A1Cs in the pre-diabetic range. Last summer I hit 7.9.

FACT. I started Metformin and it brought the blood sugar down. But it also turned my butt inside out. The side effects were horrid and never got any better. This spring, I "did my research" and on the advice of my cousin, who knows an M.D., read The Diabetes Code. It explained a lot.

FACT!! Maria Gambrelli was discovered with the murder weapon in her hand. FACT!!!! The murder weapon was registered in the name of the deceased, Miguel Ostos, and was kept, mind you, in the glove compartment of the Ballon Rolls-Royce.

Fact. I gave up alcohol for the most part since Dry January. I have enough problems.

Fact. I decided I would reverse my type 69 diabetes by doing the following things:

  • give up refined and other simple carbohydrates - flour, bread, pasta, pizza dough
  • give up added sugar, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, high sugar fructose corn syrup, high sugar sweetened cyclamate comatose refined fructose corn syrup
  • give up artificial sweeteners
  • eat healthy fats like olive oil, avocados, omega whatever fishes, full fat dairy, nuts
  • weight train (something I promised Karen I'd do), stretch, and walk
  • lose 20 pounds to get to 190 for the first time in 1962, a few years after I was born. Mama was a trooper
  • eat when hungry
  • fast from time to time - after 24 hours you burn the fat in your liver that is making everything kabonkers
I'm pretty much off any ultra-processed foods. The nice thing is that going off the carbs takes the weight off - I haven't worried about reducing calories because generally, it doesn't work. So, other than fasting, I don't go hungry much.

Fact! I halved my metformin dose and two months ago, stopped it completely. I'm down 9 pounds, and my blood sugar readings have normalized. Just the other day I got a reading 5.3 mmol/L (9 mg/dL) two hours after eating.

That's basically normal.

I'm definitely doing myself some good. Soon I'll get my A1C checked again, plus I'm going to wear one of those constant monitor things for a couple of weeks to see what's going on more closely.

Jimmy Poon is excited, he's already created some spreadsheets, graphs, and simulations.

No pie charts.

It's weird to totally upend your diet. It's hard to believe I haven't had a slice of bread or a potato chip in over two months.

Dwiggie and Me belting out some Kraftwerk versions of folk classics like 'The Mechanized Drums Saved Me' and 'Why It's Silicon Priscilla.'

Fact! An MRI showed arthuritis in my knee joints - in the usual places and also behind the patella, not to be confused with Patella, the all-you-can-eat tapas joint in the Little Spain part of Flusherville. So losing weight will help with the joints.

Sick of hearing about all this? Don't you know that what we seniors do in the Greacy Palms Senior Putt Putt trailer park is float around the pool and compare ailments?

I've spent a lot of time just putting the house right - decluttering, going through Karen's things, donating stuff, organizing - it seems an endless task, but I am driven to it.

And, I'm in the middle of a two-week dog sitting stint with Larry the Cockapoo. Yes, Larry has, and Larry does.

Larry is really easy to take care of and it's nice to have a pooch around the house for the first time in over two years. He holds me to the walk commitment too.

The summer is flying by and I'm getting the Vegas itch again. But I can't afford a trip like the last one. And the one before that. And the one before that. Been too long since I had a winner.

However, I do have some ideas, and it's starting to look like a challenge. Kind of a game. How cheap can I go?

Read the next post and find out!

    1. Wow...dude. Not too many follow up on their own self-help recipe. Stay with it. It's amazing how much better a detoxified bady can feel. Stay with the weights. They and coffee are your friend. Splenda is a LOT better than refined sugar. Don't let the noise scare you. Strawberries are god's gift to the diet conscious. Buy and eat lots of them. I dip them in...SPLENDA. Awesome way to consumme. One cup of halved strawberries is 49 calories and won't add to your A1C load. Really glad to see your incomparable wit remains intact.
